The Wobbling Joe by Albert Kan

Features

ARTIST NOTES: Sculpture – mixed media: paper, wire, wood block, glue, and aluminium foil. 36cm (H) x 30cm (L) x 16cm (W)
This sculpture was created as a parody of the former Treasurer Joe Hockey, honouring his bold attempts in turning the nation’s budget from a deficit into a surplus. The cost that we all have to bear is no longer an issue as he has wobbled himself off the front bench and lost his office.

SUMMARY

A few years ago, I retired as a management executive from the manufacturing sector. Since the early years in my career, I have been engaged in the oil & gas equipment manufacturing industries. Over the years, art silently sneaked into my inner self. And that magical process has elicited my talents in art. Now it gets under my skin and transformed a hobby into an infatuation.

Particularly, I was drawn into portrait painting. I started drawing portraits of my family and friends, followed by painting with watercolour. The process of developing my skills has been so encouraging that my confidence level has grown exponentially.

I enjoy drawing with different media ranging from charcoal, soft pastel, ink and watercolour crayon. In paintings, watercolour is my favourite media. But I have also dabbled into acrylic and oil in my recent painting adventures. Sculpture is emerging strongly as another inviting form of art that allows me to fill my imagination in a 3D space.

Currently, I am studying fine art under the Bachelor of Fine Art degree program at Monash University. I have since broadened my art approaches considerably in my BFA studies at Monash. It is this exploration I wish to continue.
