ARTIST BIO

Uma Barry is a self-taught artist whose creative journey began at the age of fifteen, nurtured and inspired by her artistic parents. Over the years, she has developed a distinguished body of work that intricately explores the beauty of nature, with a particular focus on Australian landscapes, native flora, and water scenes. Her oil paintings often feature close studies of gum trees, vibrant botanicals, flowing streams, sunlit coastlines and the delicate textures of flowers—each reflecting her deep connection to the natural world.

Defined by a rich, warm palette, fine detailing, and an elegant play of light, Uma’s style blends realism with softness, creating works that capture both the spirit and poetry of her subjects. While she paints across various sizes, she has a special fondness for miniatures, where she distills expansive scenes into intimate compositions—an artistic challenge she continues to relish.

Drawing lies at the heart of her practice. Many of her paintings begin with careful sketches and close observation, as she believes drawing is the essential foundation of her art. She frequently employs the traditional glazing method, slowly building translucent layers to achieve depth, luminosity, and richness. Working on multiple canvases at once, Uma allows each painting to evolve naturally, guided by intuition, mood, and the rhythm of drying time.

Uma has been exhibiting for many years, and her dedication and talent have been recognised through numerous awards, with her work now residing in both private and public collections worldwide. In 2015, she reached a significant milestone when she was featured on the acclaimed television program Colour In Your Life, hosted by the late Graeme Stevenson—an esteemed artist and visionary founder of the show. Alongside her exhibitions, Uma once tutored art, a chapter she holds close to her heart and always cherishes, even though she no longer teaches.

For Uma, painting is more than a profession—it is a sanctuary. Following the loss of her beloved mother, art became her greatest source of healing. Through every brushstroke, she honours her family, carries their love forward, and remains profoundly grateful for the gift of creativity. Her work invites viewers to pause, reflect, and connect with the quiet grace of the natural world.
