ARTIST BIO

Art for the soul, painted for the senses.

Melbourne artist Michael Cougan paints art for the soul. Celebrating familiar views, painted in bold colours. Art works ranging from contemporary coastal Australian seascapes through to abstraction in both oil and watercolour mediums.

His work illuminates his intuitive ability to capture the majesty in everyday views.

Those views that make you pause on a beach walk, and stare as they dance on the canvas. Michael's strong paint strokes instantly draw you into the landscape and evoke the energy and movement of the sea as if sitting present on the beach.

Michael's inspiration is drawn from both local and overseas sources. His admiration and love for the beach is a reoccurring theme, uniting his impressionist influences and his passion for bold colours.
His abstract works challenge and engage the viewer with his clever use of bold expressionist techniques.

Michael has recently returned from Europe and the US where he studied in New York and gained inspiration from creative works at Moma, New Museum, Whitney,Dia Beacon, NY Met and Guggenheim museums.
